Feelings Fiesta Plan

Introduce Pre-K students to four basic emotions—happy, sad, angry, scared—so they can name, recognize, and express feelings through song, movement, and visual activities.

Building early emotional literacy helps children identify and communicate their feelings, fostering self-awareness and social-emotional development in a fun, engaging way.

Step 1

Welcome & Warm-Up

2 minutes

  • Gather students in a circle on the floor
  • Explain today’s lesson is a Feelings Fiesta where we’ll learn about different emotions
  • Show all four Emotion Flashcards and ask if anyone recognizes them

Step 2

Emotion Song & Movement

5 minutes

  • Play the Feelings Fiesta Music Track
  • Hold up each Emotion Flashcard one at a time
  • Encourage children to name the emotion and copy a simple movement (e.g., jump for happy, slouch for sad, stomp for angry, shake for scared)

Step 3

Emotion Matching Activity

4 minutes

  • Point to the Feelings Chart Poster
  • Shuffle the Emotion Flashcards and hand them out to volunteers
  • Ask each volunteer to come up, say the emotion on their card, and place it next to the matching face on the poster

Step 4

Color & Share

3 minutes

  • Give each child an Emotion Coloring Page
  • Ask them to choose one feeling they felt today and color the matching face
  • Circulate, prompting them to say, “I feel ___ when ___.”

Step 5

Closing Reflection

1 minute

  • Bring students back to the circle
  • Quickly recap the four emotions by holding up each Emotion Flashcard
  • Praise students for sharing and learning new feeling words

Welcome to our Feelings Fiesta!
Today we’ll learn about four big feelings: Happy, Sad, Angry, and Scared.

Welcome everyone to our Feelings Fiesta! Greet the children warmly and invite them to sit in a circle. Explain that today we’re going on a dance and discovery party to learn about four feelings.

Our Four Emotions

😊 Happy  😢 Sad  😠 Angry  😨 Scared

Point to each picture as you name the emotion. Ask children if they’ve ever felt each one. Hold up the Emotion Flashcards as you go.

Emotion Song & Movement

If you’re HAPPY, clap, clap, clap!
If you’re SAD, wipe-a-way-a tears!
If you’re ANGRY, stomp, stomp, stomp!
If you’re SCARED, shake-a-way-a fears!

Chorus:
Happy, Sad, Angry, Scared—
Let’s all share how we’ve cared!

Queue up the Feelings Fiesta Music Track and play it softly. Encourage children to watch the slide and join in the movements.

Emotion Matching Activity

  1. Take a flashcard from me!
  2. Say the feeling out loud.
  3. Place your card on the matching face.

Show the Feelings Chart Poster. Shuffle the Emotion Flashcards and give each volunteer a card. Call on children one at a time.

Color & Share

Pick one feeling you felt today.
Color the matching face.
Then share:
“I feel ___ when ___.”

Hand out the Emotion Coloring Page to each child. Walk around, help with coloring, and prompt the sentence frame: “I feel ___ when ___.”
