Answer Key

Beat-Building Worksheet Answer Key

This answer key provides correct responses and a sample student example. Teachers may see a variety of valid student arrangements for Section 2—use the sample below as a guide and adjust scoring for creative accuracy.

Section 1: Note Value Check

Using the Visual Rhythm Reference Chart, write the number of beats for each symbol.

  1. ♩ (Quarter Note): 1 beat
Reasoning: A quarter note equals one full beat.
  2. ♪ (Eighth Note): 0.5 beats
Reasoning: An eighth note is half of a quarter note (½ beat).
  3. ♫ (Two Eighth Notes beamed together): 1 beat
    Reasoning: Two eighth notes together equal ½ + ½ = 1 beat.
  4. 𝅗𝅥 (Half Note): 2 beats
Reasoning: A half note equals two quarter-note beats.

Section 2: Rhythm Arrangement (Sample Answer)

Task: Choose four rhythm cards that together make exactly 4 beats. Write or draw each in the four boxes.

Sample student arrangement:

Beat BoxChosen CardBeats Contributed
Box 1♩ (Quarter)1
Box 2♫ (Two Eighths)1
Box 3♩ (Quarter)1
Box 4♫ (Two Eighths)1

Total: 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 4 beats

Teacher Note:

  • Any combination of four cards that sums to 4 beats is correct.
  • Examples:
    • 𝅗𝅥 (2 beats), ♩ (1 beat), ♪ ♪ (0.5 + 0.5), ♩ (1 beat) — This uses three cards for some beats; ensure exactly four cards are chosen or adjust instructions.
  • Adjust feedback based on the student’s chosen cards and accurate beat totaling.

Section 3: Performance Practice

  1. How many beats did you count in each measure? 4 beats
Reasoning: A standard measure here is in 4/4 time, so it must total four beats.
  2. Describe how it felt to play your measure at this tempo:
Sample Response: “It felt steady and confident. The two eighth‐notes made the rhythm a little bouncy, but I kept a good pulse.”

Teacher Tip: Look for comments on steady pulse, comfort with tempo, and any mention of which rhythm values felt easy or tricky.

Section 4: Reflection

  1. What part of creating or performing your beat was easiest?
Sample: “Clapping quarter notes was easiest because I counted ‘1-2-3-4’.”

  2. What part was most challenging?
Sample: “Playing the beamed eighth notes quickly stayed on the beat.”

  3. One new thing I learned about rhythms today:
Sample: “I learned that two eighth notes together equal one full beat.”

Assessment Guidance:

  • Award full credit when students clearly identify easiest/challenging parts and demonstrate understanding of note-value relationships in their reflections.
  • Use reflections to inform reteaching of any troublesome rhythm values in subsequent lessons.

Overall Scoring Rubric:

  • Section 1: 4 points (1 each)
  • Section 2: 4 points (1 per correctly summed card, up to 4 total)
  • Section 3: 2 points (correct beat count + descriptive response)
  • Section 4: 3 points (1 each for thorough, on-topic answers)

Total Possible: 13 points
Adjust as needed based on classroom grading policies.
