My Self-Regulation Superpowers!

Lesson Plan

My Self-Regulation Superpowers!

Students will be able to identify different emotions, understand the concept of self-regulation, and practice at least three coping strategies to manage their emotions effectively.

Learning to self-regulate is crucial for 5th graders as it helps them navigate challenging situations, build healthy relationships, and succeed academically. These skills empower students to take control of their emotional responses and make positive choices.

Step 1

Warm-Up: Emotion Check-in

5 minutes

  • Greet students and ask them to share one word that describes how they are feeling today and why (briefly).
  • Explain that it's normal to feel different emotions, and today we'll learn how to be 'emotion detectives' and 'emotion managers'.

Step 2

Introduction to Self-Regulation

10 minutes

  • Use Self-Regulation Superpowers Slide Deck (Slides 1-3) to introduce what self-regulation is: 'Being in charge of your feelings and actions, even when things are tough.'
  • Discuss examples of self-regulation (e.g., waiting your turn, staying calm when frustrated).
  • Ask: 'Why is it important to be in charge of your feelings?'

Step 3

Exploring Coping Strategies

15 minutes

  • Use Self-Regulation Superpowers Slide Deck (Slides 4-7) to introduce various coping strategies.
  • Brainstorm with students other healthy coping strategies they use or have heard of.
  • Write ideas on chart paper/whiteboard.
  • Model and practice 2-3 simple strategies as a group (e.g., deep breathing, counting to ten, stretching).

Step 4

Practice & Discussion

10 minutes

  • Present a few hypothetical scenarios (e.g., 'You get a bad grade,' 'Someone takes your toy,' 'You're nervous about a presentation').
  • Ask students to identify which coping strategy they might use for each scenario.
  • Facilitate a brief discussion on why certain strategies might be more effective in different situations.

Step 5

Cool-Down & Self-Assessment

5 minutes

  • Distribute the Coping Strategy Self-Assessment Quiz.
  • Explain that this is a quick check-in to see what they learned and what strategies resonate with them.
  • Collect quizzes for a quick informal assessment of understanding.

Welcome, Emotion Detectives!

Today, we're going to unlock your inner superpowers!

Greet students and start with a brief emotional check-in to set the stage.

What Are Self-Regulation Superpowers?

It's about being in charge of your feelings and actions.

Like when:

  • You feel super frustrated, but you stay calm.
  • You want to shout, but you use your calm voice.
  • You are excited, but you wait patiently for your turn.

Introduce self-regulation as being in charge of your feelings and actions. Emphasize that it's a skill everyone can learn.

Why Do We Need This Superpower?

Being in charge of your feelings helps you:

  • Make good choices.
  • Get along with friends and family.
  • Do your best in school.
  • Feel happier and calmer.

Discuss why self-regulation is important in real life (friends, school, home).

Your Superpower Toolbox: Coping Strategies!

Coping strategies are tools we use to manage strong emotions.

What do you do when you feel:

  • Mad?
  • Sad?
  • Worried?
  • Super excited?

Introduce the idea of 'coping strategies' as tools in our superpower toolbox. Ask students what they already do.

Coping Strategy 1: Super Breaths 🌬️

Deep breathing can calm your body and mind.

Try this:

  1. Breathe in slowly through your nose for 4 counts.
  2. Hold your breath for 4 counts.
  3. Breathe out slowly through your mouth for 6 counts.

Let's practice together!

Explain and demonstrate deep breathing. Have students practice with you.

Coping Strategy 2: Count to Ten!

Sometimes, a quick pause can make a big difference.

When you feel a strong emotion:

  • Take a deep breath.
  • Silently count to ten (or even higher!).
  • This gives your brain time to catch up and choose a calm response.

Explain counting. Have students try counting silently to themselves.

Coping Strategy 3: Move Your Body!

Physical activity can help release energy from strong emotions.

Try:

  • Stretching
  • Walking
  • Jumping jacks
  • Dancing!

What movement helps you feel better?

Introduce movement as a coping strategy. Ask students what kind of movement helps them.

Superpower Practice! 🦸

Scenario: You are working on a tricky math problem and feel really frustrated. You want to crumple your paper!

What self-regulation superpower would you use? Why?

Present a scenario and ask students to discuss in small groups or as a class what superpower (coping strategy) they would use.

Remember Your Superpowers!

You have the power to:

  • Notice your feelings.
  • Choose your reactions.
  • Use coping strategies to stay calm and focused.

Keep practicing your self-regulation superpowers every day!

Summarize the key takeaways and remind students that practicing these skills helps them grow stronger emotionally.
