Script

Rhyme Time Fun! - Teacher Script

Warm-Up: Rhyme Train (5 minutes)

"Good morning, everyone! Welcome to Rhyme Time! Today we're going to become word detectives and discover something super fun about words. To get our brains warmed up, let's play a 'Rhyme Train'. I'll say a word, and then you'll take turns saying a word that rhymes with it. It's like building a train, but with rhyming words!"

"Let's start with an easy one: cat."

(Listen for student responses like 'hat', 'mat', 'sat', 'pat'. Encourage all students to participate. Provide gentle guidance if they struggle, e.g., "What about something you wear on your head?" or "What does a dog sit on?")

"Fantastic rhyming! You're already getting the hang of it!"

Introduction to Rhymes (7 minutes)

"(Transition to Rhyme Time Slides - Slide 1: Welcome to Rhyme Time!)"

"Alright, word detectives, today we're going on a special mission to discover rhyming words!"

"(Transition to Rhyme Time Slides - Slide 2: What are Rhyming Words?)"

"Rhyming words are super cool because they sound the same at the end. It's like they have a matching sound!

Listen to these two words: cat and hat. Can you hear how the 'at' sound is the same in both words? Say it with me: cat, hat!"

"When words rhyme, it often makes poems and songs sound musical and fun to listen to."

Listen for the Match (8 minutes)

"(Transition to Rhyme Time Slides - Slide 3: Listen for the Match!)"

"Let's try another pair. Look at the pictures and listen to these words: dog and log. What part of the word sounds the same?"

(Pause for student responses. Guide them to identify the 'og' sound.)

"That's right! The 'og' sound! Great listening!"

"(Transition to Rhyme Time Slides - Slide 4: More Rhyme Fun!)"

"How about these two: star and car. Can you hear the rhyme in these words? Say them with me: star, car! What sound do you hear that is the same?"

(Pause for student responses. Guide them to identify the 'ar' sound.)

"Excellent! You've got it!"

"(Transition to Rhyme Time Slides - Slide 5: Rhyme Time Story!)"

"Now, I have a short Rhyme Time Story for you. Listen carefully for the words that sound the same at the end. I'll read it, and then we'll find the rhyming words together!"

(Read the poem aloud, emphasizing the rhyming words.)

"There once was a bear
Who lived in a lair.
He loved to eat pear
And comb his long hair!"

"(Transition to Rhyme Time Slides - Slide 6: Rhymes in Our Story)"

"Did you hear them? The words bear, lair, pear, and hair all rhyme! They all have that 'air' sound at the end. Isn't that neat?"

Rhyme Match Activity (7 minutes)

"(Transition to Rhyme Time Slides - Slide 7: Rhyme Match Activity!)"

"Now it's your turn to be super word detectives! I have some special Rhyme Match Activity Cards for you. I'm going to give each of you a few cards. Your job is to find the other cards that have words that rhyme with yours!"

(Distribute the Rhyme Match Activity Cards to students, either individually or in pairs/small groups. Explain that they should match the cards with rhyming words.)

"Work with your partner, or quietly on your own, to find the rhyming pairs. I'll be walking around to help if you get stuck. Remember to listen for those end sounds!"

(Circulate the room, providing assistance and encouragement. After about 5 minutes, bring the class back together for a quick share.)

"Alright, let's share some of the amazing rhyming pairs you found! Who wants to share one match?"

(Call on a few students to share their rhyming pairs.)

"Wonderful! You are all becoming excellent rhymers!"

Cool-Down: Rhyme Reflection (3 minutes)

"(Transition to Rhyme Time Slides - Slide 8: Great Job, Rhymers!)"

"Before we finish our Rhyme Time today, let's do a quick cool-down. Think about all the rhyming words we've talked about."

"(Distribute Rhyme Time Cool-Down.)"

"On your Rhyme Time Cool-Down sheet, I want you to either write down one new rhyming pair you learned today, or even better, try to create a brand new rhyming pair that we didn't mention!"

(Allow students a minute or two to write.)

"Why do you think it's important to learn about rhyming words? How do they help us?"

(Take a few quick responses.)

"That's right! Rhyming helps us learn about words and makes reading and writing even more fun. You all did an amazing job today. Give yourselves a big round of applause for being such super rhymers!"
