Spooky Shape Hunt!

Lesson Plan

Spooky Shape Hunt!

Students will be able to identify and name basic two-dimensional shapes (circle, square, triangle, rectangle, star) found in Halloween-themed images.

Understanding shapes is a foundational math skill that helps students develop spatial reasoning, problem-solving abilities, and prepares them for more complex geometry concepts in the future. This fun, festive lesson makes learning engaging and memorable.

Audience

Kindergarten

Time

30 minutes

Approach

Hands-on shape identification and matching.

Materials

Whiteboard or projector, Markers, Spooky Shape Hunt Slide Deck, Shape Recognition Worksheet, and Crayons or pencils

Prep

Prepare Materials

10 minutes

  • Review the Spooky Shape Hunt Slide Deck and ensure all links and content are correct.
  • Print one copy of the Shape Recognition Worksheet per student.
  • Gather crayons or pencils for students.
  • Ensure the whiteboard or projector is ready for use and markers are available.
  • Optionally, hide cut-outs of the target shapes (circle, square, triangle, rectangle, star) around the classroom for a real 'hunt' during the activity, or use the slides to guide the activity virtually.

Step 1

Warm Up: Shape Call Out!

5 minutes

  • Display the Warm Up: Shape Call Out! on the board or projector.
  • Engage students by asking them to identify simple shapes you draw on the board or point out in the classroom.

Step 2

Introduction to Shapes

5 minutes

  • Use the first few slides of the Spooky Shape Hunt Slide Deck to introduce or review the target shapes (circle, square, triangle, rectangle, star).
  • Ask students to point out examples of these shapes in the classroom as you go through each slide.

Step 3

Spooky Shape Hunt (Main Activity)

10 minutes

  • Continue through the Spooky Shape Hunt Slide Deck focusing on the Halloween-themed images.
  • For each image, prompt students to identify and name the different shapes they see.
  • Encourage active participation by having students point to shapes on the screen or call out their names.

Step 4

Worksheet Time!

5 minutes

  • Distribute the Shape Recognition Worksheet to each student.
  • Instruct students to identify and color the shapes as directed on the worksheet. Circulate to provide support and answer questions.

Step 5

Cool Down: Share Your Favorite Shape!

5 minutes

  • Transition to the Cool Down: Favorite Shape Share activity.
  • Have students share their favorite shape they found during the hunt or on their worksheet.
  • Review the learning objectives briefly by asking students to name a few shapes they learned today.

Welcome to the Spooky Shape Hunt!

Are you ready for a Halloween adventure?

Welcome students and introduce the fun theme!

What are Shapes?

Shapes are all around us! They help us describe things and build things.

Explain what shapes are and why they are important.

Can You Find a Circle?

Look for things that are round, like a pumpkin or a wheel!

Introduce the circle. Ask students to identify things that are circles in the classroom.

Can You Find a Square?

Look for things with four equal sides, like a block or a window!

Introduce the square. Ask students to identify things that are squares.

Can You Find a Triangle?

Look for things with three sides, like a slice of pizza or a party hat!

Introduce the triangle. Ask students to identify things that are triangles.

Can You Find a Rectangle?

Look for things with four sides, two long and two short, like a door or a book!

Introduce the rectangle. Ask students to identify things that are rectangles.

Can You Find a Star?

Look for things with five points, like a star in the sky or on a wand!

Introduce the star. Ask students if they can find any stars.

Time for the Spooky Shape Hunt!

We're going to hunt for shapes hidden in spooky Halloween pictures!

Explain the Spooky Shape Hunt activity.

Spooky Shape 1: Circle Hunt!

What circles can you find in this Halloween picture?

Show the first Halloween image. Ask students to find circles in it.

Spooky Shape 2: Square Hunt!

What squares can you find in this Halloween picture?

Show the second Halloween image. Ask students to find squares in it.

Spooky Shape 3: Triangle Hunt!

What triangles can you find in this Halloween picture?

Show the third Halloween image. Ask students to find triangles in it.

Spooky Shape 4: Rectangle Hunt!

What rectangles can you find in this Halloween picture?

Show the fourth Halloween image. Ask students to find rectangles in it.

Spooky Shape 5: Star Hunt!

What stars can you find in this Halloween picture?

Show the fifth Halloween image. Ask students to find stars in it.

Worksheet Time!

Now, let's practice what we've learned with our Shape Recognition Worksheet!

Transition to the worksheet.

Warm Up

Warm Up: Shape Call Out!

Hello, amazing shape detectives! To get our brains ready for our spooky shape hunt, let's play a quick game called "Shape Call Out!"

I'm going to draw some shapes on the board, and I want you to shout out the name of the shape as loud as you can!

(Teacher draws a circle)

Teacher: What shape is this?

(Teacher draws a square)

Teacher: How about this one?

(Teacher draws a triangle)

Teacher: And what do we call this shape?

(Teacher draws a rectangle)

Teacher: What's this long one called?

(Teacher draws a star)

Teacher: And finally, what's this pointy shape?

Great job, everyone! Your eyes and ears are super ready for our Spooky Shape Hunt! Let's get started!

Cool Down

Cool Down: My Favorite Spooky Shape!

Great job today, shape detectives! You worked so hard finding all those spooky shapes.

Now, for our cool-down, I want each of you to think about your favorite shape that we learned today. Was it the circle, the square, the triangle, the rectangle, or the star?

When it's your turn, I want you to tell us:

  1. What is your favorite shape?
  2. Why do you like that shape?
  3. Can you think of one real-life Halloween thing that is that shape? (Like a round pumpkin for a circle, or a square window on a haunted house!)

(Teacher facilitates a quick share-out, calling on a few students. Encourage brief, enthusiastic responses.)

Amazing sharing, everyone! You truly are shape masters! Happy Halloween, and keep looking for shapes everywhere you go!

Answer Key

Spooky Shape Challenge! Answer Key

This answer key provides expected responses for the Shape Recognition Worksheet.

Part 1: Color the Shapes!

(Teacher should verify that students have correctly identified and colored the shapes as follows. The key here is correct shape identification.)

  1. Color all the circles orange!
    • Thought Process: Look for shapes that are perfectly round with no corners or straight lines. Color these orange.
  2. Color all the squares purple!
    • Thought Process: Look for shapes with four equal straight sides and four square corners. Color these purple.
  3. Color all the triangles green!
    • Thought Process: Look for shapes with three straight sides and three corners. Color these green.
  4. Color all the rectangles black!
    • Thought Process: Look for shapes with four straight sides and four square corners, where opposite sides are equal in length (two long, two short). Color these black.
  5. Color all the stars yellow!
    • Thought Process: Look for shapes with five points or more, often symmetrical. Color these yellow.

Part 2: Draw the Shapes!

(Teacher should verify that students have attempted to draw the specified shapes. Emphasis is on understanding the fundamental characteristics of each shape, not artistic perfection.)

  1. Circle:
    • Expected Drawing: A closed, round curve.
  2. Square:
    • Expected Drawing: Four equal straight sides connected at 90-degree angles.
  3. Triangle:
    • Expected Drawing: Three straight sides connected at three points.
  4. Rectangle:
    • Expected Drawing: Four straight sides, with opposite sides equal, connected at 90-degree angles.
  5. Star:
    • Expected Drawing: A shape with five or more points.

This answer key helps assess students' ability to recognize and reproduce basic 2D shapes.
