Spooky Shape Hunt!

Students will be able to identify and name basic two-dimensional shapes (circle, square, triangle, rectangle, star) found in Halloween-themed images.

Understanding shapes is a foundational math skill that helps students develop spatial reasoning, problem-solving abilities, and prepares them for more complex geometry concepts in the future. This fun, festive lesson makes learning engaging and memorable.

  • Print one copy of the Shape Recognition Worksheet per student.
  • Gather crayons or pencils for students.
  • Ensure the whiteboard or projector is ready for use and markers are available.
  • Optionally, hide cut-outs of the target shapes (circle, square, triangle, rectangle, star) around the classroom for a real 'hunt' during the activity, or use the slides to guide the activity virtually.

  • Display the Warm Up: Shape Call Out! on the board or projector.
  • Engage students by asking them to identify simple shapes you draw on the board or point out in the classroom.

Step 2

Introduction to Shapes

5 minutes

  • Use the first few slides of the Spooky Shape Hunt Slide Deck to introduce or review the target shapes (circle, square, triangle, rectangle, star).
  • Ask students to point out examples of these shapes in the classroom as you go through each slide.

Step 3

Spooky Shape Hunt (Main Activity)

10 minutes

  • Continue through the Spooky Shape Hunt Slide Deck focusing on the Halloween-themed images.
  • For each image, prompt students to identify and name the different shapes they see.
  • Encourage active participation by having students point to shapes on the screen or call out their names.

Step 4

Worksheet Time!

5 minutes

  • Distribute the Shape Recognition Worksheet to each student.
  • Instruct students to identify and color the shapes as directed on the worksheet. Circulate to provide support and answer questions.
