Activity

Spooky Sprint Showdown: Game Station Instructions

Welcome, ghouls and goblins! Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to complete the challenges at each station with your team. Work together, think creatively, and have fun!

Station 1: Mummy Wrap Race

Objective: To wrap one team member like a mummy using toilet paper as quickly and neatly as possible.

Materials:

  • 2-3 rolls of toilet paper per team
  • Timer (teacher will manage)

Instructions:

  1. Designate one team member to be the "mummy."
  2. When the teacher says "Go!", start wrapping your mummy from head to toe (leaving face clear for safety).
  3. The goal is to use all the toilet paper provided and make your mummy as complete as possible.
  4. The team with the best-wrapped mummy (neatness and coverage) at the end of the time wins this station!

Station 2: Halloween Riddle Me This!

Objective: To solve as many Halloween-themed riddles as possible within the time limit.

Materials:

Instructions:

  1. As a team, read through the riddles on the worksheet.
  2. Discuss and write down your best guess for each riddle.
  3. The team with the most correct answers at the end of the time wins this station!

Station 3: Blindfolded "Feel Box" Challenge

Objective: To identify mystery Halloween-themed objects by touch while blindfolded.

Materials:

  • A box with a hole cut out (or a bag)
  • Various Halloween-themed objects inside (e.g., gummy worms, peeled grapes, dried leaves, small toy spiders, fake cobwebs, small pumpkin, candy corn)
  • Blindfolds (optional, or students can just close their eyes)
  • Paper and pencils for guesses

Instructions:

  1. One team member at a time will be blindfolded (or close their eyes).
  2. They will reach into the "feel box" and try to identify one of the mystery objects by touch only.
  3. Team members can give non-leading clues to help their teammate guess. Example: "Is it squishy?" not "Is it a gummy worm?"
  4. Record your guesses. The team that correctly identifies the most objects wins this station!

Station 4: Spider Web Maze

Objective: To navigate a "spider web" maze (made of string) and retrieve an object without touching the web.

Materials:

  • String (pre-setup as a maze between chairs or desks, creating a "web")
  • Small, lightweight "spooky" objects to retrieve (e.g., plastic spiders, bat rings)

Instructions:

  1. One team member will attempt to go through the string maze.
  2. The goal is to move through the web without touching any of the string.
  3. Other team members can guide their teammate with verbal instructions (e.g., "Go left!", "Duck down!").
  4. If a team member touches the string, they must restart from the beginning.
  5. Once they reach the other side, they retrieve a spooky object and return to the start through the maze. The next team member then goes.
  6. The team that retrieves the most objects within the time limit wins this station!

Answer Key

Halloween Riddle Me This! Answer Key

Here are the answers to the Halloween riddles. Use this to check your team's answers!

  1. I have a face but no eyes, hands but no arms. I'm filled with light but have no wick. What am I?

    • Answer: A jack-o'-lantern
      • Thought Process: The description fits a carved pumpkin (face, no eyes/arms) that holds a candle (filled with light, no wick).
  2. What do you call a witch's garage?

    • Answer: A broom closet
      • Thought Process: Witches are known for riding brooms, and a closet is where things are stored.
  3. I speak without a mouth and hear without ears. I have no body, but I come alive with wind. What am I?

    • Answer: An echo
      • Thought Process: An echo repeats sound (speaks, hears) but isn't a physical being. The last clue, "comes alive with wind," hints at how sound travels and bounces.
  4. What do you get if you drop a pumpkin?

    • Answer: A squash
      • Thought Process: This is a play on words. When you drop something, it "squashes" or gets crushed.
  5. I wear a shroud, but I'm not dead. I have no pulse, yet I cause dread. I wander at night, but I have no bed. What am I?

    • Answer: A ghost
      • Thought Process: Ghosts are often depicted in shrouds, are not alive (no pulse), cause fear (dread), and wander.
  6. What does a vampire never order at a restaurant?

    • Answer: A stake
      • Thought Process: This is a pun. Vampires are famously vulnerable to a wooden "stake" through the heart.
  7. I have cities, but no houses; forests, but no trees; and water, but no fish. What am I?

    • Answer: A map
      • Thought Process: A map contains representations of geographical features like cities, forests, and bodies of water, but not the actual elements.
  8. What kind of music do mummies like?

    • Answer: Wrap music
      • Thought Process: This is a pun on "rap music" and the fact that mummies are "wrapped" in bandages.

Script

Spooky Sprint Showdown Script

Introduction (5 minutes)

(Teacher displays Spooky Sprint Showdown Slides - Slide 1: "Welcome to the Spooky Sprint Showdown!")

"Good morning/afternoon, everyone! Get ready for some frightfully fun challenges today. We're going to kick things off with a quick brain-teaser to get our spooky senses tingling."

(Teacher points to the word scramble on Slide 1.)

"On the screen, you'll see a 'Halloween Word Scramble.' I want you to work individually or with a partner for the next two to three minutes to unscramble as many of these words as you can. These are all common Halloween terms. Ready? Go!"

(After 2-3 minutes, teacher brings the class back together.)

"Alright, pencils down! Let's see how you did. Who can tell me the answer to number one? (Pause for student response) That's right, Ghost! How about number two? (Pause for student response) Candy Corn! Excellent!"

(Teacher quickly goes through the answers for the word scramble.)

"Great job getting your brains warmed up! Now, let's talk about what we're doing today."

Game Introduction & Team Formation (5 minutes)

(Teacher displays Spooky Sprint Showdown Slides - Slide 2: "Get Ready for Ghoulish Games!")

"Today, we're going to dive into some 'Spooky Sprint Showdown' challenges! This lesson is all about teamwork, problem-solving, and having a blast with some friendly competition. You'll be working in small teams to tackle a series of Halloween-themed games at different stations around the room."

(Teacher displays Spooky Sprint Showdown Slides - Slide 3: "Team Up and Get Moving!")

"Here's how it's going to work. First, I'm going to divide you into teams of about 3-4 students. Once you're in your teams, you'll be assigned a starting station. Each team will have approximately 4-5 minutes at each station to complete the challenge. When you hear my signal, you'll rotate to the next station. Your goal is to work together, communicate effectively, and have some fun!

"Any questions about the general idea before we form teams?"

(Address any questions.)

"Okay, let's get into our teams. When I call your name, please move to your designated team area quietly."

(Teacher forms teams based on pre-planned groupings or quickly groups students. Assigns each team a starting station.)

"Alright teams, listen carefully for your starting station. Team 1, you'll begin at the Mummy Wrap Race! Team 2, you're starting with Halloween Riddles! Team 3, head to the Blindfolded Feel Box! And Team 4, you're at the Spider Web Maze!"

"You'll find the specific instructions for each game at your station, but feel free to refer to the Game Station Instructions if you need a quick refresher. Remember to work together and have fun! You'll have 4-5 minutes per station. Ready... Set... Spook!"

Game Rounds (15 minutes)

(Teacher starts a timer for 4-5 minutes. Circulates around the room, observing, assisting, and offering encouragement to teams. After 4-5 minutes, uses a clear signal to indicate rotation.)

**(Teacher displays Spooky Sprint Showdown Slides - Slide 4: "Game On! Spook-tacular Challenges Await!")

"Time's up for this station, ghouls and goblins! Please clean up your area quickly and quietly, and rotate to your next station. Team 1, move to Halloween Riddles! Team 2, to the Blindfolded Feel Box! Team 3, to the Spider Web Maze! And Team 4, to the Mummy Wrap Race!"

(Teacher repeats the rotation instructions and manages time for each subsequent round until all teams have visited most or all stations. Adjust time per station as needed based on student engagement and pacing. If there are fewer than 4 stations, adjust rotations accordingly. For 30 minutes, 3 stations at 4-5 minutes each is ideal, allowing for 2-3 rotations.)

"Last rotation, everyone! Let's make it count!"

Cool-Down (5 minutes)

(After the final rotation, teacher brings the class back together. Teacher displays Spooky Sprint Showdown Slides - Slide 5: "Share Your Spook-tacular Moment!")

"Alright, my wonderfully spooky teams, let's bring it in! Great energy and teamwork today. I saw some fantastic collaboration and problem-solving happening. Now, I want to hear from you."

"Who would like to share their favorite game from today's 'Spooky Sprint Showdown'? What made it your favorite?"

(Teacher calls on a few students.)

"Were there any challenges that really made you think, or a moment that was particularly funny or exciting?"

(Teacher calls on a few more students.)

"It's clear you all put a lot of effort into working together. Remember, lessons about teamwork and quick thinking aren't just for Halloween games – these are skills you use every day, in every subject!"

"Fantastic work today, everyone! You truly made this a Spooky Sprint Showdown to remember. Have a wonderful rest of your day!"
