Your Mind: Calm & Clear?
Learning to focus and feel great!
What does 'Calm & Clear' mean to you?
Welcome students and introduce the exciting journey into understanding their minds. Ask them what they think the title 'Your Mind: Calm & Clear?' means to them. Connect it to everyday feelings.
What is Mindfulness?
- Mindfulness means paying attention to the present moment.
- It's like pressing a pause button on your busy thoughts.
- You notice what you are seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting, and feeling right now.
- It's about observing without saying if it's
Explain mindfulness in simple terms. Emphasize that it's about paying attention on purpose, without judgment. Give a quick example like really tasting your favorite food or noticing all the colors in a sunset. Ask if anyone has felt something like this before.
Your Mind is Like a Puppy!
- Sometimes our minds can be a bit like a playful puppy.
- It loves to run around, get distracted, and think about many things at once!
- One minute it's thinking about what you ate for breakfast, the next it's thinking about what you'll do after school.
- Mindfulness helps us gently bring our puppy-mind back to what we want to focus on.
Introduce the idea of the mind being like a puppy – sometimes it wanders. Explain that mindfulness helps us gently bring it back. Ask students to imagine what their mind is like today.
Our Secret Superpower: Our Breath
- Guess what? You have a secret superpower always with you: your breath!
- Your breath is like an anchor that can keep your mind in the present moment.
- When your mind starts to wander like that playful puppy, you can always come back to your breath.
- It's always there, always reliable, and always ready to help you feel calm.
Explain that breathing is a fantastic way to anchor our attention. It's always with us! Prepare them for the 'Breathing Buddies' activity.
Breathing Buddies Time!
- Find a comfy spot – either lying on your back or sitting tall at your desk.
- If you have a Breathing Buddy, gently place it on your tummy.
- Close your eyes gently if you feel comfortable, or just soften your gaze.
- Now, let's just notice our breath...
Guide students through finding a comfortable position and preparing for the activity. Remind them it's not about doing it 'perfectly' but about noticing. Refer to the Mindful Moment Script.
How Did That Feel?
- What did you notice during our Breathing Buddies activity?
- Did your buddy move up and down?
- Did your mind wander, and you gently brought it back?
- Remember, mindfulness is a skill, and like any skill, the more you practice, the stronger you become!
Conclude the guided practice. Ask students what they noticed during the activity. Emphasize that practicing helps make them stronger.
Mindfulness Everywhere!
- You can practice mindfulness anywhere, anytime!
- At school, at home, when you're playing, or even when you're feeling a little worried.
- It helps you to focus better, feel calmer, and understand your emotions.
- Now, let's reflect on what we learned in our Mindfulness Reflection Journal!
Reiterate the benefits of mindfulness and encourage them to use it. Introduce the journal for reflection.
Script
Teacher's Script: Mindful Moment - Breathing Buddies
(As students are getting settled with their Breathing Buddies, ensure quiet in the room.)
"Alright everyone, let's find our comfy spots. You can lie down on your back on the carpet if there's space, or you can simply rest your head on your desk, making sure you're comfortable."
"Once you're settled, gently place your 'Breathing Buddy' on your tummy. If you don't have a buddy, that's perfectly fine; just place your hands on your tummy instead."
"Now, if you feel comfortable, you can gently close your eyes, or you can just soften your gaze by looking at a spot on the floor. The goal is to feel safe and relaxed."
"Let's take a moment to just notice our bodies. Feel where your body is touching the floor or your chair. Wiggle your fingers and toes, and then let them be still."
"Now, bring your attention to your Breathing Buddy on your tummy. Or, if you're using your hands, focus on your hands."
"Take a slow, gentle breath in through your nose... and feel your tummy gently rise, lifting your Breathing Buddy up towards the ceiling. See if you can feel that gentle lift."
"And now, slowly, gently breathe out through your mouth, like you're blowing out a candle... and feel your tummy gently fall, and your Breathing Buddy comes back down."
"Let's do that again. Breathe in softly through your nose... noticing your tummy rise..."
"And breathe out slowly through your mouth... feeling your tummy fall."
"Continue to breathe like this at your own pace. Just notice. Don't try to change your breath, just observe it."
"If your mind starts to wander, that's okay. Our minds are like playful puppies, they love to run around. Just gently, without judgment, bring your attention back to your Breathing Buddy rising and falling."
"Feel the coolness as you breathe in, and the warmth as you breathe out."
"Each breath is a new chance to be right here, right now."
(After about 2-3 minutes of guided breathing)
"Now, slowly bring your attention back to the sounds in the room. Wiggle your fingers and toes, and when you're ready, you can gently open your eyes and sit up. Take your time."
"How was that for everyone? What did you notice about your breathing? Did your breathing buddy move a lot or a little?"
