Build rapport with a defiant 5th-grade student by creating a safe, supportive environment, using a light icebreaker and feelings check-in, and practicing empathetic listening to encourage openness and small cooperative steps.

Students who refuse directions often feel unheard or unsafe; this session establishes trust, validates their feelings, and sets a positive tone for future cooperation, reducing long-term defiance.
